George Baxter Ordway III, 55, of Vernon, beloved husband, father, son; and friend, died in peace Tuesday (May 19, 1998) at Hartford Hospital. He leaves his wife of 30 years, Marion (Loring) Ordway, his special son, Robert of Collinsville and his adored daughter, Cheryl and her husband, Dr. Richard Putnam of Wallingford. Born In Boston and schooled at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), he lived most of his life in Wilton, Fairfield, Manchester, and Vernon. In the late 1960’s, he worked as an optical physicist at Norden Systems and then at Barnes Engineering, Stamford, as manager of applications in the development of infrared technology, From 1973 until his death, he served at President of Bostco Industries, Inc., designing industrial optical scanning equipment for copper refineries in Peru and Brazil and also President of The C. G. Bostwick Company (Hartford), a 96 year old roofing and architectural sheet metal firm known
for its technical expertise in slate, copper and historic restoration such as the CT State Capitol. Mr. Ordway served as a consultant for the. National Park Service for such projects as Ellis Island and for the Copper Development Association (NYC). He was a classical downhill skier and an avid salmon fisherman. He was a member of The Gifford Yacht Club (NH) and
enjoyed white-water canoeing. He did aerial photography out of helicopters and was known for his incessant scientific experiments and energetic projects. His creativity spilled over into unique surprises for family and friends who always appreciated his good humor, positive attitude and interesting conversation. Mr. Ordway served on The President’s Advisory Council at WPI, as well as on many other boards, including Hockanum Industries, the Visiting Nurse & Community Care, Inc. (VNCC) and the Connecticut Roofing Contractors Association (CRCA) which established a scholarship In Mr. Ordway’s name in 1996, shortly after his diagnosis of cancer: honoring his ethical service to the industry. He was also an active member of the First Congregational Church of Vernon (FCCV) whose parishioners surrounded him and his family with God’s love during his 2 year illness. (Knight) Ordway, his sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Stanley Klock all now living in Maine and many other beloved relatives and’ friends. A Memorial service will be Saturday, May 23, 11 a.m., in the First Congregation, al Church of Vernon, 695 Hartford Tpke. (Rt. 30), Vernon. Burial will be private in. Elmwood Cemetery.
