Sandra H. Russell, “Sandy Gay Husted”, 82, of Manchester, CT, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on August 11, 2026. She was born on October 14, 1943, in Hartford, CT, the daughter of the late Wanda Marie Karr and George Highland Husted. A lifelong resident of Manchester, Sandy was a loving wife, devoted mother and grandmother, and a friend to many.

Sandy graduated from Manchester High School in 1961. On January 19, 1963, she married her high school sweetheart and the love of her life, Horace E. Russell, Jr. Together, they shared 63 years of marriage and three sons.

Sandy was a devoted stay-at-home mother until around 1975, when she became a lunchroom monitor at Waddell School, where her sons attended. Later, she began working at Stop & Shop in Manchester, where she spent many years as the lead of the salad bar.

Sandy had a natural talent for arranging flowers and a remarkable knowledge of plants. Her love of gardening could be seen in the beautiful flower gardens she lovingly tended and the floral arrangements she created throughout her home. She and Butch especially enjoyed spending time together in the garden and watching the birds gather at their feeders.

In retirement, Sandy enjoyed attending Zumba classes at the Senior Center, creating beautiful crafts, especially basket weaving, and indulging in her love of reading. She also had a special love for her beloved cocker spaniels, Muffin, Abby, and Annabelle, who brought her great joy and companionship over the years.

Sandy and Butch shared a love of the ocean and especially enjoyed their time in Cape Cod and the Cayman Islands. They returned year after year, creating wonderful memories and forming lifelong friendships. They also enjoyed visiting farmers markets and arts and crafts shows, as well as taking leisurely walks and stopping to chat with their cherished neighbors.

Sandy is survived by her three sons, Dean Russell, James Russell, and Stephen (Jennifer) Russell; her grandchildren, Edward and Thomas Russell, Alexandra and Daniel Russell, and Allyson (Robby) Lightsey and Zachary Russell; her daughter-in-law, Saeko Russell; and many loved nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends.

In addition to her parents, Sandy was predeceased by her beloved husband, Horace Russell, and her daughter-in-law, Barbara Russell.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, August 18, from 4:30 pm – 6:30 pm. at the John F. Tierney Funeral Home, 219 West Center Street, Manchester. A private burial will be held at a later date.
