Rosamond M. "Ronny" Toomey, long-time resident of Manchester and teacher at Manchester High School, passed away on Thursday, August 28, at the Manchester Manor. She was 103 years old. Mrs. Toomey was born on October 16, 1910 in South Portland, Maine, the daughter of Philip S. and Mae (Bowen) Melcher. She graduated valedictorian of the Class of 1929 from South Portland High School, and was Phi Beta Kappa at Bates College, Class of 1933. She captained the basketball teams both in high school and college. Mrs. Toomey taught briefly at South Portland High School and Windham High School, paused to marry and raise a family, and then taught for 20 years at the Hollister School and Manchester High School, where she Chaired the Math Department. Mrs. Toomey was the widow of C. Francis "Chick" Toomey, the well-known football official and member of the Connecticut, Manchester and Athol, MA Sports Halls of Fame. She is survived by sons David, of Wayne, PA; John "Jack" of Southbury, CT.; and Kevin of Fletcher, NC, eight grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. After Mr. Toomey's death in 1993, Mrs. Toomey moved into the Arbors at Hop Brook, where she served on many committees, including particularly organizing and running the bridge program, until she moved to Manchester Manor three years ago. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, September 5, at the Church of the Assumption, 29 South Adams Street, Manchester, and a burial will follow the next day at Gethsemane Cemetery in Athol, MA.
